Introduction
Time, too, is a function of Shadow, and even Dworkin did not know all of its ins and outs.
-- The Guns of Avalon by Roger Zelazny
Whispers in the hallways of Amber:
"...you hear?..."
"...How can you expect me to hear anything when you're whispering..."
"...Random and Queen Vialle left..."
"...did? When?..."
"...What I want to know is where..."
"...regent."
"...Who?..."
"...Prince Julian, I heard..."
"...What?"
"...shh. Someone will hear..."
"...let them. I work in the stables...that awful Morgenstern..."
"...I thought it was Prince Gerard! Who told you it was Julian?..."
"...you did, moron..."
"...count my blessings. It is Gerard..."
"...How long will they be gone?..."
"...why did they leave?..."
"...you think they would tell me? Don't be silly..."
From Regent Gerard's decree:
...All the scions of Amber must present themselves to King Random when he returns. This means
you will have to stay in the castle for as long as he is away. Delays will indicate you have
something to hide. I remind you all of the oath of allegiance you made to the King, whose
explicit orders I follow now...
From a letter to Regent Gerard:
...I'm trusting you because I think you're the only one in the entire family who can be
trusted. If this is what becomes of being King of Amber, I'm ready to abdicate and throw the
crown to the fishes in Rebma.
Doubtless the others will want to know the why and where and when of everything...please don't
tell them. I strongly suspect that it's one of them, anyway. Keep an eye on them--all of them.
Remember, this is for Vialle. Or whatever pipsqueak fragment of fondness you might have for
your little bro.
I will return as quickly as I can.
My eternal thanks,
Random
King of Amber and all that bull
P.S. If it all works out, through some miracle or other of the Unicorn...we could name him
Gerault or Geran or something like that. Just a thought.
Clockwise Shadows is an Amber PBEM--that is, based on the Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny and
Erick Wujcik's Amber Diceless Roleplaying, out from Phage Press. The majority is still in
my brain, unfortunately, but sooner or later I'll get all the necessary information up.
